Introduction

The field of pharmacognosy is a branch of pharmaceutical science that studies herbal medicines and compounds of plant and natural origin.

Research topics: Phytochemical study (extraction, separation and identification of natural compounds, plant cell culture, biochemical transformations and biosynthetic

pathways), phytopharmaceuticals (raw materials for the production of herbal medicines) and phytotherapy (pharmacological and therapeutic effects of this herb and traditional medicine)

The beginning of the PhD course in Pharmacognosy in Iran is from 1989. Due to the new approach to nature and the growing tendency to use natural compounds in the pharmaceutical, food, cosmetic and health industries, as well as the fact that significant advances have been made in the field of extraction and identification of natural and herbal compounds in the world

. The field has been updated and spread. Therefore, the need for pharmacognosy specialists in various educational, research and executive fields in the field of health is inevitable.

History of Department

The Pharmacognosy Department of Kerman School of Pharmacy has been formed since 1988, including the Pharmacognosy and Biotechnology Complex, as an independent group in the Faculty Since 1392, the biotechnology unit has been separated from pharmacognosy and this group currently has two full-time faculty members with a master's degree. Pharmacognosy is the science of studying medicinal substances from natural sources and generally studies natural medicinal sources. These natural resources may be plant, animal, microbial, or any other source of natural origin. Pharmacognosy Group has a pharmaceutical and pharmacognosy training laboratory, a research laboratory with suitable facilities for conducting research in various fields of pharmacognosy, medicinal plants garden and herbarium center for storage of plant samples. The most important devices and equipment of the pharmacognosy group include Analytical HPLC, Preparative HPLC, Freeze Dryer, UV-Vis Spectrophotometer and other common equipments used in pharmacognosy laboratories. The group currently has two research doctoral students and one specialist doctoral student. Also, two admission courses for traditional pharmacy students of Kerman University of Medical Sciences have been held with the participation of the Pharmacognosy Department of the Faculty of Pharmacy. The university's Medicinal and Traditional Plants Research Center is also part of this group.
